JEQUILLA’S STORY

Jequilla hasn’t always had such a bright smile and inner light. Her childhood was marked with a series of ups and downs that brought her to where she is today.

Growing up, she remembers family fun with her four siblings, mother, and father and, overall, being a pretty happy and carefree kid. That all came crashing down when she was taken from her home and put into her first foster care family where people weren’t always very nice. Thankfully, her grandmother eventually gained custody of her and introduced Jequilla to her second home and a great source of support, her Boys & Girls Club.

Despite her struggles, Jequilla always recognized the importance of school and wanted to do well. Unfortunately, she didn’t see a path toward college or a brighter future. She credits Club staff for getting her out of her comfort zone, pushing her to participate in enriching programs, and encouraging her to perform at the Teen Poetry Slam. Finally, she had an outlet to release some of the pain she had felt, and even better, serve as a source of inspiration for others.

The Club restored her confidence and inspired her to envision a future greater than she had ever dreamed. She will attend Georgia State University in the fall and hopes to study nursing. Your support helped guide Jequilla to find her light. Thank you!
