Vulcan Materials Hosts Quarry Race to Benefit Gwinnett Schools, Boys & Girls Clubs

02 April 2019, Atlanta, GA—Offering up-close views inside a working quarry and a running challenge like no other, Vulcan Materials Company hosts the 4th annual Quarry Crusher Run—May 4, 8:00a.m.—at its Norcross quarry.

The race starts at the top of the quarry, goes all the way down to the bottom, then back up to the finish line. Runners experience a 660-foot descent on an average grade incline of 10-percent. Participants have three distance options: the 3.7 mile Quarry Crusher, the 7.4 mile Double Crusher, and a Half Crusher run/walk to the bottom with a van ride back to the top. Registration is available at www.quarrycrusherrun.com. Race prices range from $40 to $50 and include official t-shirt and finisher’s medal. Discounts are available for military, first responders, teachers, students and teams. Prizes are awarded to overall winners and age group placers in the Single and Double Crusher.

“For runners who like a challenge, for anyone who enjoys the chance to experience an extraordinary environment that’s usually not accessible, this race is for you,” says Race Director Jaime Lomas. “Our Atlanta race is unique in our series, because this is the largest of the Vulcan quarries to host a race to date—and the only one that offers a Half Crusher option.”

The Quarry Crusher Run is held at nine Vulcan Materials locations across the country. Runners participating in multiple races get discounts and can earn exclusive Rock the Quarry series medals. Every race has a community partner, with Vulcan Materials donating proceeds to these local organizations. For the past three years, Gateway85 Community Improvement District has served as Top of the Rock Sponsor of Quarry Crusher Run Atlanta, which benefits Gwinnett County Public Schools and Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta.

The Quarry Crusher Run Series started in 2012 in Columbia, S.C. as a 3.7 mile race taking runners on a steep course to the granite quarry’s floor and back up to the finish line. In 2017, the Quarry Crusher Run expanded to Vulcan quarries in other cities. Vulcan Materials Company now hosts nine events in eight states, each race benefiting a local community partner.

Vulcan Materials Company is the nation’s largest producer of construction aggregates—primarily crushed stone, sand and gravel—and a major producer of aggregates-based construction materials including asphalt and ready-mixed concrete. With a network of operations that stretches coast to coast, Vulcan locates quarries near the nation’s growth centers. For more information, visit www.vulcanmaterials.com.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta’s mission is to save and change the lives of children and teens, especially those who need us most, by providing a safe, positive and engaging environment and programs that prepare and inspire them to achieve Great Futures. Through 20+ Clubs in 10 metro counties, trained and professional staff serve nearly 3,000 youth (ages 6-18) daily through programs that foster academic success, healthy lifestyles and character and leadership development. BGCMA also oversees Camp Kiwanis, a 160-acre outdoor residence camp. While the cost to effectively serve those who need us most is approximately $5,700 per member, families are asked to pay between $60 and $135 per child each year based on income; and no child is turned away due to inability to pay.
