Meet Nyree Wright: Youth of the Year for East DeKalb Boys & Girls Club

Grade: 10th

 When did you join your Club?

Summer of 5th grade

What types of activities are you involved with?

I love dancing and all sorts of team-building activities that my Club offers.

Has your Club helped you overcome any challenges?

My former Club executive director Mr. Brandon was always someone I could talk to when I was having a hard time.

 

Why is it important for teens to speak up?

I think teenagers can use their voice to help adults make a difference.

What type of volunteer projects have you done?

I’ve done book drives and school clean-ups.

What types of internships have you done?

My Club has given me a lot of opportunities to develop my skills for the real world. I was a junior staff member. During that time, I had to help with the snack program. I also befriend the first graders at my Club.

What are your goals after graduating from high school?

I want to go to UCLA.

What’s your career goal?

I want to become a marine biologist.

If you could change anything in the world, what would it be?

I would like to see more gender equality.
