Youth of the Year for Lawrenceville Boys & Girls Club

1. What does the phrase “Inner Rockstar” mean to you?

Being who you are, being the best of yourself while being able to help others at the same time. 

2. Tell us about a success you achieved through the support of your Club?

2 years ago, interviewing for summer counselor w/ BGC provided leadership skills. Without BGC you wouldn’t have been able to be as present in the community as she is today.

3. Tell us about a barrier or challenge that your Club helped you to overcome?

Few years ago, I was shy and I didn’t talk to a lot of kids. Being around my staff and friends help me be more opened. I am a better help with  cooperation and teamwork. 

4. Why is your Boys & Girls Club important to you?

Bgc is important not only has it helped me it has helped others in the bgc. They help the community and bgc expand on that. I love how present and distinguished bgc is. 

5. Who else has been a major influence in your life?

My mom, she has done a lot for me. She has overcome a lot of barrier for herself and being able to provide through work and helping my siblings shows that I can overcome things too. 

6. What exciting or cool experiences have you had because you were a member at your Club?

Lock-in. Never been to a lock in before. It was fun to see other members my age having fun Being able to connect with other youths at other bgc in surrounding areas. It was different from school. 

7. In what ways has your Club supported your goals for college, post-secondary education, and career?

The club has helped by not only showing that college is achievable but able to give opportunities. I was able to receive tutoring and helped me realize that I am able to attend college and receive help to get there. 

8. Do you volunteer in your community or at the Club? Can you share a few examples of this?

Volunteer: Keystone, helped out with carious of cleaning. Tutored members and for the community: helped clean trash, worked in soup kitchens planted trees and tutor kids in her neighborhood. 

9. What worries you the most about your future?

How uncertain my future is. I try to plan out my future but knowing that something can come anytime to change my plans. I’m a perfectionist.

10. What are you doing/can you do to spark positive change?

I have gone around our community trying to educate how they can help make changes. Convincing the youth in her community that they have a voice that can change the world.
