Annual Report 2019

2019 Annual Report

To us, the puzzle is a symbol of the part we play in shaping the lives of kids and teens. Children have so much potential and greatness inside them. It takes many different pieces coming together to support them in reaching their full potential. Boys & Girls Club is proud to be part of their puzzle. We thank you for being part of their puzzle too.

Friends & Supporters –

Earlier this year, I transitioned into the role of a lifetime – President & CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta. I’m so grateful to have joined the Boys & Girls Club family and for the chance to partner with you in shaping brighter futures for thousands of youth across metro Atlanta.

We are so thankful for you! Last year, nearly 10,000 kids and teens walked through our doors and found an extra dose of love, support, and encouragement through their Club family. They left more focused, resilient, and ready to make the world and their communities a better a place.

It’s because of you the work we do is possible. Thank you for your commitment to shaping the lives of kids and teens in and around Atlanta!

To us, the puzzle is a symbol of the part we play in shaping the lives of kids and teens. Children have so much potential and greatness inside of them. It takes many different pieces coming together to support them in reaching their full potential. Boys & Girls Club is so proud to be part of their puzzle. We thank you for being part of their puzzle too.

As we face the challenges that lie ahead, I’m encouraged by the great strides and connections we have made for our kids.

In 2019:

  • 98% of our seniors in the CareerBound program graduated from high school with a post-secondary opportunity.
  • More than 60% of our kids and teens engaged in physical activity at least 5 times or more per week, with female members achieving particularly large gains.
  • Nearly 800 teens explored career paths and learned soft skills they can use in the workplace.

We also celebrated major milestones as an organization. Last March, we opened our doors to our newest location – John H. Harland Boys & Girls Club: The Innovation & Expression Studio (Harland T.I.E.S). This Club site, the first arts-focused Boys & Girls Club in the country, offers a new point of connection for our kids…a new piece to their puzzle…focused on helping them find and nurture their passion, learn critical skills, and showcase and perform their work.

As our 2020 Strategic Plan comes to a close, we are proud to celebrate our successes alongside you. We also know that our work has only begun. Just like a puzzle, the coming months will test our ingenuity, knowledge, and commitment. But our path seems clear amidst all of the unknown.

As we look toward reopening our Clubs, we are dedicated to serving kids and families across metro Atlanta with safety top of mind. We are committed to fighting for racial equity, challenging the racial injustice that holds back so many of our members and staff, and showing kids the power of their voice in serving as advocates for a better future. We are devoted to partnering with local schools to help address academic backslide and the challenges of distance learning. Perhaps most of all, we are looking forward to standing alongside our kids, serving as their trusted mentors as we’ve done for more than 80 years. Our kids have big feelings, big questions, and big challenges ahead, but also huge promise and huge potential.

I am honored to work with you as part of the Boys & Girls Clubs family in serving the 20 Clubs and thousands of kids and teens we reach each day. Thank you for partnering with us! We appreciate your commitment to supporting the futures of kids and teens in and around Atlanta.

Sincerely,

David Jernigan

Our girls are more active than ever!

We’ve created new avenues to get them moving through non-traditional sports like Double Dutch, yoga, and kickball. In 2019, more than half of our middle and high school girls reported engaging in physical activity 5 times or more per week – a 54% jump from just two years ago!
