A Grand New Boys & Girls Club for Cherokee County Kids

Supportive donor honored with club naming at opening celebration

November 3, 2007

ATLANTA (Nov. 3, 2007) –Today, Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta (BGCMA) named its new Cherokee County Club the Malon D. Mimms Boys & Girls Club at its grand opening celebration and ribbon cutting.

The Club was named after Malon D. Mimms, owner of the Malon D. Mimms Company in recognition of his great contributions to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta, as well as his positive endeavors and support in many local communities. His generous contributions have enabled BGCMA to serve more kids and enhance its child development services in Cherokee County. The new Club has more space for programs, activities, recreational and educational areas as well as offices for staff members.

"I want to thank all of our generous donors who helped make this new club a reality,” said David Carriker, regional vice president of Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta. “It’s very rewarding to come here and see the smiling faces of the kids, who are in awe of their new club. We are thrilled to have Malon Mimms representing our Club in Cherokee County. He is a great BGCMA enthusiast, and without his support, this grand, new Club would not be possible.” Cherokee County is one of Georgia’s fastest growing counties (source United States Census 2006).

Keeping with the county growth, the new Club, which is one of the largest Boys & Girls Clubs in Metro Atlanta, can serve more than 250 kids per day, 100 more than the Club’s prior location in a school.

"My brothers, along with myself and all of Mimms Enterprises, are honored and blessed to be able to give the lead gift, as well as, the naming of the new Malon D. Mimms Boys & Girls Club,” states David Mimms, chairman of Mimms Enterprises. “Our father’s lifetime of community support and generosity has influenced our beliefs and values, and in turn we wanted to show our recognition and love to him, while also providing a huge opportunity to better the lives of many boys and girls in Cherokee County.”

The grand opening celebration kicked off with a ribbon cutting. The Cherokee High School Band
performed, and Club member kids gave tours throughout the day.

"This is an event that truly represents the Cherokee County community,” said Jerry Cooper, Cherokee County Manager. “I am glad to be a part of this celebration, as it’s a reflection of how we all impact each other and the difference we can make in our community. These kids are the future of Cherokee County.”

Several supporting donors were recognized in the day’s event, including Mimms Enterprises, Northside Hospital Cherokee, Sheriff Roger Garrison Charities, United Community Bank, Habersham Bank, First Cherokee State Bank, Cherokee Bank, Dobbs Foundation, Sanford Epstein and Associates, Cherokee County and more. Each donor is recognized with a plaque displaying their name by respective donation area within the Club.

The new Club is located at:

1082 Univeter Road
