Alex Mullins and Naomi Gaiton of Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta Win Charles Schwab Foundation Scholarship
Money Awarded for Successful Participation in Financial Education CurriculumJuly 7, 2009

Alex Mullins, a member of the Joseph B. Whitehead Boys & Girls Club and Naomi Gaiton, a member of the A.R. “Gus” Barksdale Boys & Girls Club, have been awarded a $2,000 college scholarship from Charles Schwab Foundation. Mullins and Gaiton were selected because of their successful completion of the Money Matters: Make it CountSM program and the ways they are incorporating what they learned into their daily life and applying it to achieve short- and long-term goals.
Money Matters was created by Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) and Charles Schwab Foundation to promote financial literacy among teens. The program is targeted especially to youth from underserved communities.
“Financial literacy is a stepping stone to lifelong financial well-being,” said Carrie Schwab-Pomerantz, president of Charles Schwab Foundation. “Through the Money Matters program and these scholarships, our goal is to help today’s teens become financially fit adults who have the knowledge and understanding to make good financial choices as adults.
Mullin and Gaiton are two of 20 teens to receive the scholarship this month from Charles Schwab Foundation.
“Helping our Club members understand financial basics with the Money Matters program is critical to helping them become productive and responsible citizens now and for the future,” said William Lampley, president of Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta. “Mullin and Gaiton have done an exceptional job with the program and become role-models for their peers and younger members at the Club.”
The Money Matters program is available to all Boys & Girls Clubs serving teens and helps members learn the basics of money management, including budgeting, wise use of credit, saving and investing. Resources include a Teen Personal Finance Guide and the Money Matters Web site – a secure site for teens. Money Matters also features the Schwab Employee Volunteer Program, which encourages Schwab employees to share their financial expertise with teen Club members and their families.
To date, the Money Matters program has served nearly 180,000 teens and provided 147 college scholarships totaling $300,000.
