January 24, 2010
ATLANTA (Jan. 24, 2010) – Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta (BGCMA) named Reona Wynn Youth of the Year (YOY) of the Newnan Coweta Boys & Girls Club. Wynn also placed second runner-up in the metro Atlanta Youth of the Year competition.
Youth of the Year, a year-round development program, honors Boys & Girls Club members as outstanding citizens and leaders. The recognition program begins with the selection of a winner from Boys & Girls Clubs within BGCMA’s 11 counties. Selections are made based on leadership qualities and activities through family, community, school and Club involvement. This year’s 14 chosen Club Youths of the Year, including Dunlap, were honored at the metro Atlanta Youth of the Year event at Georgia Pacific on Jan. 24.
Wynn has been attending the Club for ten years and also attends Newnan High School. She excels in community service to her Club and the community, where she campaigned for voter registration through Usher Camp, donated clothes and food to the Salvation Army, volunteered at the Community Welcome House for Abused Women Shelter, and participated in College Bound and other teen programs regularly. She is also president of the Keystone Club and works part-time at an insurance agency.
“Reona is enthusiastic and dedicated to her Club, and she is always more than willing to pitch in and help out,” said Darryl Smith, executive director for Newnan Coweta Boys & Girls Club. “She shows the utmost respect to her elder and peers and is guaranteed to succeed. Her cheerfulness and positive attitude is a pleasure to be around. We are very proud of her accomplishments and know she’ll continue a path for success.”
BGCMA’s Youth of the Year event on Jan. 24 was themed The Face of Promise because all 14 Youths of the Year embody the promise of their Clubs. YOY finalists were Aleshay Teasley of the NFL/YET Club, winner and recipient of the $5,000 scholarship; Stacy Finley of the W.W. Woolfolk Club, first runner-up and recipient of the $2,500 scholarship; Reona Wynn of the Newnan/Coweta County Club, second runner-up and recipient of the $1,500 scholarship; and David Ramirez of the Brookhaven Boys & Girls Club, third runner-up, and recipient of the $1,000 scholarship. Taylor Comer of the James T. Anderson Club was awarded The Ada Lee Correll Community Spirit Award for his outstanding service to his Club and community.
The scholarships were provided generously by The Correll Family Foundation. Thanks to Georgia Pacific for hosting the event, and Fiserv and the UPS Foundation for sponsoring the program and event.
