Director Q & A

Q & A with the Executive Director – Debra Carson

Why Boys & Girls Club

In this role, my life has come full circle. I joined the Boys & Girls Club at age six, worked as a teen camp counselor, received my first monetary college scholarship, and served on the Alumni Association. Years later, my children also attended a Boys & Girls Club. My Club journey was significantly impacted by James “Major” Adams who left an indelible impression in the lives of youths and families for over 5 decades and later became my mentor. It is my desire to exemplify a fraction of Major’s qualities as a great leader for the families at the Matthews Boys & Girls Club.

Who Influenced Me

Two women greatly influenced my life. My #1 hero was my mom. Although she was far from “perfect”, she epitomized the character, strength, integrity and tenacity of a woman, mother and friend. At a very young age, I learned from her how to love, care and support others unconditionally – especially those who “needed it the most”. Also, Marian Wright Edelman of the Children’s Defense Fund has positively swayed my decision to become a life-long advocate for children and families.

Advice for our Youth

The advice I consistently offer youth is to always stay true to themselves and never give up on their dreams. They can do and be anything in life by working hard and surrounding themselves with positive people.

Our Impact in the Community

I believe Matthews is a hidden gem and destined to be a beacon of light in the community. Together we can Empower students, Engage parents, Enlist schools, and Encourage neighbors, businesses and friends to continue to support our efforts as we serve families within the community.

What Makes Our Club Special

Matthews’ staff, students, parents and friends are resilient! It is our collective goal to provide the tools, resources and opportunities to help our kids be “great” and (re)write their own narratives.
